About the Event
The Flying Dutchman, composed by the German composer Richard Wagner, stands out as a masterpiece inspired by maritime legends, with a profound dramatic impact. The libretto, based on a folktale written by Heinrich Heine, brings themes such as nature, curse, loyalty, and love to the stage through Wagner’s intense narration.
This legend, set on the Norwegian coasts in the 18th century, tells the story of a Dutch captain doomed to immortality. The only thing that can save him is the love of a woman who will bind herself to him with eternal fidelity. At the center of this tragic yet hopeful narrative is Senta, imbued with the strong significance Wagner attributes to female characters.
Richard Wagner (1813–1883) is one of the most influential figures of the Romantic era. Wagner, who developed the concept of "musical drama," positioned the orchestra not merely as an accompaniment, but as an active element of the narrative. With works like Der Ring des Nibelungen, Tristan und Isolde, and Die Walküre, he transformed the art of opera.
