The Ankara State Opera and Ballet is a venerable arts institution established in 1948 with the purpose of performing opera and ballet at international standards, promoting these arts, and producing quality works in these fields. As one of the most crucial components of the cultural identity of Republican Ankara, the institution serves as the central hub for the capital's artistic pulse.
The Opera House, known to the public as the "Grand Theatre," holds substantial historical architectural value. Originally constructed as the "Exhibition Palace" by Şevki Balmumcu in 1933, the building was transformed into its current form by the German architect Paul Bonatz in 1947-1948. With its original architectural details, it stands among the most distinguished examples of Republic-era Turkish architecture.
Possessing a vast repertoire, the Ankara State Opera and Ballet stages numerous classical works and modern productions, both domestic and international. Conductor İbrahim Yazıcı occasionally assumes the role of director in various concerts and operas hosted by the institution. In addition to the Opera Stage, ADOB also accommodates the Leyla Gencer and Operetta stages, continuing to guide Turkey's polyphonic music culture and performing arts.
