About the Event

The opera Carmen, composed by Georges Bizet, has become one of the most significant cornerstones of the world opera literature. The libretto, adapted from Prosper Mérimée’s eponymous short novel, was written by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac. The work is set in the 1830s Spain, in the city of Seville. The production centers on the tragic relationship between Carmen, a character who cherishes her freedom, and Don José, a soldier.

This production, staged by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, meets the audience in the historic Büyük Tiyatro, one of the institution's permanent venues. The work, which brings the social structure and dramatic elements of the period to the stage, is noted for its rich choir and orchestra partitions. İbrahim Yazıcı occasionally takes on the role of conductor in Carmen performances carried out within the institution.
